Product Insert Campaigns: Workaround for QR Code bug in Messenger

As of the time of writing this article (October 13th, 2022), there’s a bug with Facebook Messenger, which affects all QR code campaigns driving traffic to Messenger flows. This will affect all Easybot Product Insert flows in standalone campaigns or funnel campaigns.

Description of the issue

When the user scans the QR code or types the URL on their mobile phone, they will either get redirected to the Messenger app or to a Facebook website prompting them to continue in Messenger, depending on their phone model and version.

Once they are in Messenger, the following will occur:

• If they opted in before: the Messenger conversation with your page will open, but no conversation will start.
• If this is their first time on your page: they’ll be asked to press the ‘Get Started’ button, and once they do they will either receive the welcome message, or no conversation will start.

The bug lies in that the parameters of the campaign necessary to trigger the appropriate conversation, which are contained in the URL, are not sent to Messenger. Therefore ManyChat does not recognize that opt in, and cannot trigger the corresponding flows that are configured.

This bug is affecting mainly mobile devices, with most desktop use cases working correctly.

Workaround

While Facebook sorts out the issue, the workaround is to create a new Welcome Message on ManyChat, and connect that to the appropriate campaigns that you’re running.
